SPC Awards 2019 Open!

The Syracuse Press Club is once again preparing for its annual awards competition. Starting Jan. 1, members of the news media in central New York may submit their entries.Deadline for entries is Jan. 31 at 11:59PM. Eligible entries must have been published, broadcast or posted on-line during the 2018 calendar year. Awards will be handed out at our annual banquet on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Genesee Grande, Syracuse.

Make sure to also keep in mind individuals in your organization you may want to nominate for one of our club awards, covering professional standards, newcomer, and news source. You can nominate someone for one of these awards by following this link. 

Rules and Eligibility

A. All entries MUST have been published or aired in 2018 except for in specified online categories.

B. An award will be presented in each of the following: “Best in Category (1st place)” will receive a certificate with seal and blue ribbon; “Second Place” will receive a certificate with seal.

C. The contest is open to all journalists working in and published within the following 21 counties of New York State: Onondaga, Madison, Cortland, Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Herkimer, Oneida, Otsego, Delaware, Chenango, Broome, Tompkins, and Seneca counties; and as far west as State Route 14 in Tioga, Chemung, Wayne, Schuyler and Yates counties.

D. There is no limit to the number of entries you can submit in each category.

E. The same story may not be entered twice. It is up to each contestant to decide which category any given story best belongs based upon these rules.

F. Early Bird Entry Fee is $15 for each entry BEFORE JANUARY 15th. After the 15th, fee per entry is $20. Students participating in the college categories also pay an entry fee of $15 for each entry.

G. BROADCAST ENTRIES: Broadcast contestants must include in their entry the URL linking the video or audio file being submitted for an award. 

Print entries must be submitted as .PDF files. 

All entry forms must be completed and entries uploaded or URL provided by 11:59 p.m. January 31, 2019.

To ensure fairness, the SPC will try, wherever possible, to use panels of judges for each category selected from outside the SPC contest area.

Note: This is an awards competition. If only one entry is submitted in a category, we will return the entry and entry fee. Judges also reserve the right to not bestow a first or second place award in a category. Awards will not be judged unless we have received your entry payment. Entries with incomplete entry forms, missing stories, or broken links may be disqualified.

The deadline for all entries is Thursday, January 31, 2019.

To Login:

  • Go to www.betternewspapercontest.com.
  • Click “Contestant Login” on right side of page.
  • If you are the contest supervisor for your media organization, click Contest Manager.
  • Select the appropriate contest from the drop-down menu — “2018 SPC Professional Recognition Awards”
  • Select the appropriate News Organization. (If your news organization is not listed, contact
  • Enter your temporary password: bnc (lower case), and click Login. When you first login, the system will prompt you to create a new secure password. 
  • The first time you log in, you will also be required to update your account with contact information and to check a box to agree to the terms of use..

To Submit: 

  • After you log in, click on My Contests at the top of the page and then click Submit Entry.
  • Once you begin to submit entries, BetternBNCAdmin will send an validation email to the email address listed for the Contest Manager. You must click on the validation link.
  • Select the appropriate Division (a larger grouping of categories).
  • Select the appropriate Category.
  • (If applicable) Read the corresponding Category Note (directly below the Category selection box), describing what is expected for the category’s entry content.
  • Complete the Headline/Title field.
  • Based on the type of entry, add content:
    • To upload file attachments (other than audio/video), click Browse, navigate to the desired file, select Open, and click Upload. Allowed file types are PDF, DOC, TXT, JPG, GIF, and PNG. If more than one attachment is desired for this entry, repeat these steps. If you reach a point where you cannot add any more attachments to an entry, you may have reached the attachments limit, set by your contest administrator. Please try to keep file sizes to 5mb or less, to aid judges in accessing entry content. For larger files (between 5-50mb), you may upload your file(s) to www.issuu.com, and copy and paste the URL into the Web URL field.
    • To add web/audio/video content: copy and paste the content’s web address into the provided Web URL field. To host your content online, either upload it to a free streaming content website (e.g. YouTube) or talk to your IT person about adding it to your organization’s website. Make sure the content will be accessible online throughout the contest and awards process. Here are some examples of free streaming content websites where you can upload audio and video content:
    • IMPORTANT: Please ensure that items are not behind a pay wall or a password-protected area. If they are, you must provide username/password info in the Comments section of your entry. Judges may disqualify your entry if work samples are inaccessible
  • Click next.
  • Add credits for those responsible for the entry content.
  • Add comments (if applicable), but keep them brief (e.g. 100 words).
  • Click submit.
  • During the submission process, you will be asked to update the Contest Manager contact info one more time, and to provide a secondary contact name, email and phone number for use in case the Contest Manager cannot be reached.
