Former Herald sports editor Arnie Burdick passes away

We received word earlier this week that former Herald-Journal/Herald-American sports editor Arnold "Arnie" Burdick died in South Carolina Tuesday at the age of 92.  For more we link you to The Post-Standard's coverage and a tribute to Burdick by columnist Bud Poliquin.  The Syracuse Press Club would like to send its sincerest condolences to Burdick's family and express our deepest thanks for his contributions to great journalism in Central New York.

Shortly after graduating from Syracuse's Central High School in 1939, Bud Vanderveer joined the Herald-Journal. However, it wasn't until he returned from service with the U.S. Army in World War II that he began covering sports full-time - the career that made him one of the most respected and best-known sports writers in New York State.
