Local television stations moved quickly to use their airwaves to try and help raise money for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. WSYR-TV Newschannel 9, WSTM-TV NBC3, WTVH CBS5, and WCNY-TV asked viewers to reach in to their wallets, and boy did they. WSYR teamed with the Red Cross at their Bridge Street studios on Friday January 15th during their 5pm news broadcast. The station's web site reports that viewers pledged $23,512 to earthquake victims. The following Monday, WSTM, WTVH and WCNY teamed up with the Red Cross for another fundraiser. During their evening news broadcasts, WTVH & WSTM would go to live to the phone bank at WCNY with WSTM's Laura Hand and WCNY's George Kilpatrick making the pitch for pledges. The broadcast pleas for help continued past 6:30 on WCNY's Central Issues program. The combined effort raised $63,652 in pledges. This evening, Hollywood jumps into the act with Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief. The primetime broadcast will air on all the major networks this evening at 8pm. |
