  • Samantha Bee’s solution for making money on local news? Lottery tickets
Add Samantha Bee to the list of media thinkers with a scheme to make money in local journalism. On this week's episode of "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee," the "Daily Show" alumna became the latest late-night comedian to give journalism a boost. But, rather than put out a call for donations like her colleague John […]
  • AP style change: Singular they is acceptable ‘in limited cases’
For the first time, The Associated Press now permits journalists to use "they" as a singular pronoun. The AP announced the style change Friday at the American Copy Editors Society conference in St. Petersburg, Florida. The change follows years of questions among copy editors, reporters and editors about the use of language specifically about people […]
  • Burned once, publishers are wary of Medium’s new subscription offering
Late last summer, Kelley Calkins and her team began discussions with Medium to take their burgeoning company in a new direction. Grab your smartphone! The Syracuse Press Club is proud to serve as one of the sponsors of the Syracuse Social Media Breakfast's #ShowusCNY project.

In celebration of Mashable's Social Media Day, which takes on June 30, Syracuse Social Media Breakfast is inviting Central New Yorkers to take pictures and short videos of their CNY activities during the weekend of June 29-30 and post their pictures and video, along with a description to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Google+ using the hashtag #ShowUsCNY. Are you taking in the breeze along Skaneateles Lake? Walking the Erie Canal trail? Hanging out downtown or taking a stroll at Green Lakes? We want to see it! SMB is also building a RebelMouse page to aggregate all of the content.

We hope you'll participate and spread the word. For more information please contact Kevin Morrow at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Comings and Goings

The Auburn Citizen has new publisher, and several behind-the-scenes people in local TV change jobs.

On Monday, Cayuga Media, which publishes The Citizen in Auburn and auburnpub.com announced that publisher Mike Rifanburg has let his position, and will be replaced by former publisher Rick Emanuel. Emanuel left the paper for years ago to run the company's Post-Star in Glens Falls. Owner Lee Enterprises says Emanuel will oversee both publications while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

Toni Guidice honored with Professional Standards award
Toni Guidice worked for The Post-Standard for 23 years, spending most of that time making others look good.

She was the leader of the crew of copy editors who worked every night after the reporters went home, catching errors in their stories before any readers saw them, writing snappy headlines and creating the pages that landed on the doorsteps.

It’s a job that comes without bylines or glamour.

Photographer John Berry recognized with Professional Standards award
John Berry is a bulldog photographer who had a 33-year career at The Post-Standard.

He approached his job with a determined, no-nonsense attitude. He was willing to go nose-to-nose with anyone who stood between him and a good breaking news image. But in the photos he shot, you could feel the empathy he felt for the subjects.

During his career, the newspaper nominated John twice for the Pulitzer Prize award.
