Former WRVO GM Krauss Passes Away

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Former WRVO general manager and 2010 Syracuse Press Club Wall of Distinction honoree John Krauss died yesterday, June 17. He was 64.

WRVO says Krauss was one of the station's longest serving administrators, holding a varitety of different managerial roles in 40 years. He was general manager for 14 years and retired in 2010.Krauss began his career at WRVO in 1969, the day the station signed on the air at SUNY Oswego.

Grab your smartphone! The Syracuse Press Club is proud to serve as one of the sponsors of the Syracuse Social Media Breakfast's #ShowusCNY project.

In celebration of Mashable's Social Media Day, which takes on June 30, Syracuse Social Media Breakfast is inviting Central New Yorkers to take pictures and short videos of their CNY activities during the weekend of June 29-30 and post their pictures and video, along with a description to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Google+ using the hashtag #ShowUsCNY. Are you taking in the breeze along Skaneateles Lake? Walking the Erie Canal trail? Hanging out downtown or taking a stroll at Green Lakes? We want to see it! SMB is also building a RebelMouse page to aggregate all of the content.

Comings and Goings

The Auburn Citizen has new publisher, and several behind-the-scenes people in local TV change jobs.

On Monday, Cayuga Media, which publishes The Citizen in Auburn and auburnpub.com announced that publisher Mike Rifanburg has let his position, and will be replaced by former publisher Rick Emanuel. Emanuel left the paper for years ago to run the company's Post-Star in Glens Falls. Owner Lee Enterprises says Emanuel will oversee both publications while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

Awards presented for best CNY journalism of 2012

The Syracuse Press Club honored the best journalism of 2012 at an awards ceremony Saturday night at Drumlins Country Club, in Syracuse.

The club's 35th annual Scholarship and Professional Recognition Awards dinner honored exceptional work in local print, broadcast and online.

 Among the highlights of the evening,  broadcasters WCNY-TV, YNN, CNYCentral and Newschannel 9 shared a first place award in the Special Television Program category for their jointly produced special Protecting Our Children. It was a project aimed at the problem of physical and sexual abuse of children.

Toni Guidice honored with Professional Standards award
Toni Guidice worked for The Post-Standard for 23 years, spending most of that time making others look good. 

She was the leader of the crew of copy editors who worked every night after the reporters went home, catching errors in their stories before any readers saw them, writing snappy headlines and creating the pages that landed on the doorsteps.

It’s a job that comes without bylines or glamour.

Like a lot of Central New Yorkers, Maureen Green came here for the educational opportunities and then never left. A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, Maureen came to Syracuse for graduate work at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications.
