Two in Public Broadcasting to be Honored by Ithaca College |

Ithaca College has chosen the initial recipients of its Izzy Award for special achievement in independent media. The college has chosen "Democracy Now!" host and executive producer Amy Goldman. The college also chose blogger Glenn Greenwald for the honor. The event is April 23rd at 7pm at the State Theater in downtown Ithaca. More details follow in the release sent to us by Ithaca College;
Free tickets may be picked up at the Ithaca College Campus Center or the State Theatre box office. Located at 105 W. State Street, the State Theatre box office is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and before performances from two hours prior to showtime until a half hour past curtain. The IC ticket office, located in the recreation center on the first floor of Campus Center, is open Monday-Friday, 12:10 to 6 p.m.

News 10 Gets Letter Apparently From Gunman |

Binghamton police say they have no reason to doubt the authenticity of a letter received by News 10 Now in Syracuse that appears to be from the gunman who killed thirteen people in Binghamton last week. The envelope which arrived at the News 10 Now newsroom yesterday contained a letter, a drivers license from Jiverly Wong, and a pistol permit. It also contained several photos of Wong posing with guns. Here are links to News 10 Now's stories. |

Right around noon on Friday, the AP wire quoted reports on the web sites of CBS station WBNG and pressconnects.com, the internet site of the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin that people had been shot and others were being held hostage in the city just more than an hour south of Syracuse. In the next few hours, ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox broke into regular programming as anchors in New York reported on the tragedy.

It's been a hell of a year for the American economy in general and the newspaper and broadcast industries in particular. Debt loads, new technologies, and big drops in ad revenues have seen some newspapers go under, layoffs across the board in broadcast and print, and even consolidations. Today Post-Standard Publisher and Editor Stephen A. Rogers spoke to readers in a front page article about the difficulties faced by the Post and other news organizations. He also outlined changes readers could expect in the coming weeks. Inside the paper, in the local section, the Post also looked at challenges in the news media in general. |
